About us

'Chemachetu' is Swahili for ‘our good thing’.

We are a slow fashion, ethical brand based in Nairobi, Kenya. We blend the rich experience of Kenyan artisans with the highest quality locally sourced materials to bring you a range of leather goods with an undeniably contemporary design and appeal. By purchasing our goods, you’re enabling us to create employment for our artisans, and a livelihood for all our suppliers. For each bag bought, we donate 2 books to rural school children with an aim of creating libraries in the rural schools in Kenya. These are children who are disadvantaged in terms of access to libraries, books and the internet. We believe that bags may not change the world but those who buy them will. Our Story

Founded to be a little bit different from other companies

Chemachetu started during the covid pandemic, a time when we were all forced to slow down and reexamine what we value. In this period, we found our belief that not everything needs to be done in a hurry and profits don't need to be made at the expense of human beings. We started with one simple premise in mind: every person deserves top quality at a fair price. We have grown quite a bit since then, but that major principle hasn’t changed. We also want to have a social impact and for this reason, we decided that for each bag bought, we would donate 2 books to rural school children in Kenya. These are children who are usually disadvantaged in terms of access to books, libraries and the internet. Today we have a wide range of different products inspired by and created using feedback from our customers for whom we have custom made various items. Our team of skilled designers, and craftsmen makes our products from the finest materials to ensure you get the best value for your money.

How we work

For each bag bought we donate 2 books to rural school children in Kenya.

At our workshop, we practice slow fashion. We have no production lines. Only one designer works on your bag. This means he/she selects the best part of the leather, cuts it and works on it till it becomes a bag you will love. This may not be the cheapest way of doing things, but it means we give human beings, who are our designers, and artisans an opportunity to practice their craft skillfully. When you order from us and we will take you through the journey of creating, cutting and stitching your bag. The sentimental feeling of seeing it transform from leather or canvas to a bag is something you will live to cherish. Post-purchase communication is also an essential part of our service. we offer repairs in case of any damage on all bags we sell.
